Basket with food for families in El Salvador and Honduras

Dear Friends of the people of El Salvador and Honduras,

People will simply die here, if not from the virus, from hunger.” Mercy sister in Honduras

An invitation to help SHARE deliver FOOD BASKETS and SEEDS OF HOPE

in El Salvador and Honduras.

At this time when the world is facing the crisis of Coronavirus, we pray that you and your loved ones are well.

As we come to grips with the healthcare and economic crisis here in the US, the Coronavirus has just begun to sweep through Central America. Countries are shutting down airports, imposing curfews and lock downs without providing the kind of support communities need. National militaries are in the streets arresting people even if they are looking for food. The implications are catastrophic, magnifying the suffering of the people who are already contending with endemic poverty, inadequate health infrastructures, government corruption and military repression.

Now, in the context of Covid-19, the big threat is hunger.

Our brother, Father Melo writes to Rev. Deborah Lee of the Interfaith Movement for Human Integrity, “We know that the world situation is very difficult, but a pandemic like the one that threatens us, further increases inequalities, and affects the most impoverished and excluded peoples. … In addition to the threat of the virus, we are threatened by the militarization of the government and threatened by hunger.”

SHARE is seeking to raise $12,750 for the Covid-19 emergency to support communities in El Salvador and Honduras. Through our long term partners we will deliver Food Baskets including beans, corn, rice, oil, sugar and sardines, as well as a package of Seeds of Hope (corn, beans and squash seeds -the three indigenous sacred sisters) to be planted during the rainy season from June to November.

We turn to you for your critical support to provide this lifeline to our sisters and brothers.

Tax-deductible donations of any amount will help offset the crushing blow of lost work, healthcare costs, and hunger alleviation. You can make your donation online or send your check to the SHARE Foundation/Covid-19 Emergency, 2425 College Ave. Berkeley CA 94704.

United against Covid-19, may we join as a beloved community in solidarity.
